Frequently asked questions

What do the lessons entail?

Lessons include interpreting repertoire (how to play pieces accurately, stylistically and expressively), sight reading, technical work (ie working fine motor skills such as coordination, agility, speed etc.) aural training (listening and ear-training), theory and performance techniques.

What type of piano do I need?

This depends on where you are in your musical development and how far you intend to go. If you are a beginner a digital piano with weighted keys will suffice. If you are studying grade 5 or above I would recommend an acoustic upright or hybrid upright. If you can afford a grand piano they are ideal.

I've never had piano lessons before, can I still learn to play?

Anyone who is able and willing to put in the effort can learn the piano. It's a motor skill that can be learned by anyone. The only requirement is mindful regular practise.

I'm an adult learner, can I still learn the piano?

I have taught many adult learners over the years and in many cases they make very good students as they attend lessons through their own free will rather than parent's will. I know from experience that adults, even beginners can improve a great deal and play the piano with good skill.

Will lessons take place at teacher or student's home?

Either! I'm happy for students to come to me or I can drive to you if you live nearby. If you live far from me there might be a small travel fee.

Do you have an up to date DBS?

Yes. I have an up to date DBS which anyone can check online.

How fast can I expect to progress?

This depends on your goals and level of commitment. You could do a grade every year (standard pace) or several grades a year.

I am very self-conscious about playing in front of people but I would love to learn the piano.

Performance anxiety is common among public performers and is one aspect that we focus on during lessons. The ABRSM performance and Trinity digital exams could be an option if you are a self-conscious student. As you can submit a recorded performance online Instead of attending an exam centre and performing for an examiner.

Do you charge separately for theory lessons?

No. theory is included in the 60 minutes lessons. Unless you are looking for theory only.

Is there parking available at your place?

Yes, you can park on my driveway.

will I be able to sit through the lesson with my child?

Yes, lessons take place in my living room and you are welcome to sit through the lesson.
